Computer History: The Era of Tablet Computers In today’s technology everything seems to be coming in a small package. Who could have thought that a thing so powerful can be so small like the tablet computer? This minicomputer features a flat touch screen that uses a digital pen, stylus, or fingertip as the main input device. Gone were the days when you have to use a mouse to move something or a keyword to type. Thanks to this awesome technology we hold this complete computer in the palm of our hands. The name tablet computer was created because of its resemblance to writing tablets. And because of its low hardware requirements and easy operation, tablet computers are subjected to various design studies in many developing countries. Known as the best example of Pen computing technology, tablet computers and its associated special operating software has made it possible to work anywhere, anytime. The first patented electronic tablet used for handwriting was in 1888 and in 1915 the first patent for a system that recognized handwritten characters was granted. Through the years the tablet computer technology is better than ever that many companies started commercializing the product. These companies include Communications Intelligence Corporation, Percept and Linus. After a few years some companies started crowding up the field as they brought out the Penpoint OS operating system. Created to respond to touches and not on the clicks of the keyboard or mouse is what makes this technology unique from any other. This feature alone allows integrated hand-eye operation which is a natural part of the somatic sensory system. The increasing popularity of tablet computers is disrupting the current vendor sales by weakening conventional laptop PC sales. Just like a regular computer, tablet computers can run a number of operating systems. These operating systems include Google Android, Apple iOS, and Microsoft Windows. Currently some manufacturers are testing Windows CE and Chrome OS for tablet computers. 2010-2011 is the year of tablet computers. These years will give way to the most anticipated tablet computers that many manufacturers have been raving about. This technology has come a long way and it’s never been better. Apple’s iPad Letting your fingers do the surfing is the coolest thing. Apple’s very own iPad is the company’s only tablet product. Built from the ground up to take advantage of the large Multi-Touch Screen, iPad features nothing but the best tablet technology. The best way to experience the web even if you are always on the go is though an iPad. You can view the whole pages in landscape or in portrait and with the iPad’s mail application you can do the split-screen view and you can use the expansive onscreen keyboard. This way you can see and touch your emails in many ways you can. Your photos are the most important files on your computer and with the iPad’s vivid LED-backlit IPS display you can view your pictures in a whole different way. Just by tapping you can open the albums easily, and you can even play a slideshow and your photos. The iPad’s 9.7-inch high-resolution screen is perfect for watching HD movies, podcasts, music videos, TV shows, and more. The tablet’s YouTube application is another come on for easy video access. Buying and browsing songs from iTunes are just a tap away.

JooJoo Joojoo is another tablet computer that is out in the market. It features a 12-inch touch screen with 1366-by-768 resolution, and it is capable of displaying 720p high-definition videos. Based on some of its reviews, the JooJoo’s processor is 1.6 GHz Intel Atom chip and it also comes with 1 GB RAM, 4GB solid-state drive for caching Web content, microphone, webcam, one USB 2.0 port, Bluetooth, headphone jack and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Dell Android Tablet Rumours has it that this all-new iPod touch-like device from Dell will be launching at the Consumer Electronics show in January 2011. There are only few details about this tablet, but according to some source Dell would run Google’s Android operating system and is planning to have a 7-inch touch screen. Dell’s new device is designed to compete directly with the Zune HD and iPod Touch. They are planning to launch the product first in UK but the date is soon to be set, then after that the U.S. launch will follow. According to rumours, this device is more like a mobile internet device (MID) or a multimedia player. But whatever it is the market for new technology is wide open for manufacturer to show off their new masterpiece.

Nokia N800 Nokia started its tablet technology by offering its state of the art N770, a Debian-based Linux distribution that is built for Internet Tablet line. Known as the “wireless Internet appliance” from Nokia, the Internet Tablet was launched at the Las Vegas CES 2007 Summit in January 2007. After the first model Nokia followed it up with N800. This newly-improved model allows the user to browse the internet while using Wi-Fi networks or mobile phone via Bluetooth. It also features an internet radio, an RSS news reader, media player for audio and video files, and lastly the image viewer. The N800 is very similar to many handheld operating systems that provide a “Home” Screen – the central point from which all applications and setting are gauged. This home screen is divided into various area for launching applications and a menu bar. It also comes with a large customizable area that can display information such as Internet radio player, Google search box, RSS reader, and more. Run by Maemo, the N800 is the new Tablet computer to watch out for.

Microsoft Courier Due to the increasing popularity of Tablet computer Microsoft is also planning to launch their very own tablet. Based on some reports, this secret project is being developed at the Microsoft HQ. The Courier is the company’s new device that features two 7-inch screens, a built-in camera on the back and Wi-Fi. The device will also use the combination of multi-touch and stylus inputs. The company is also gearing this device to create a digital recreation of a two-page paper day planner. But then again all these could change, at the moment all we can do is to wait and see how this amazing technology would turn out.
